On January 31, 2026, Pakistan hosted the session titled “Upholding the Sanctity of Treaties for the Maintenance of International Peace and Security”, bringing together Security Council members and UN states from across the globe.
The session featured a panel of experts, including David Nanopoulos, Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, Professor Adil Najam, and Ahmer Bilal Soofi. Mr Soofi focused on the Indus Waters Treaty, emphasizing the binding nature of its dispute resolution mechanisms and warning that undermining such treaties could weaken global legal order and confidence in shared resource management.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, reiterated that the treaty remains fully in force and stressed that respect for international agreements is essential to maintain global peace and security.
The session reinforced Pakistan’s commitment to upholding treaty obligations and highlighted the crucial role of legal expertise, represented by Ahmer Bilal Soofi, in safeguarding international frameworks.
