Ahmer Bilal Soofi, Founding and Managing Partner of ABS & Co, has been re-elected to the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) International Court of Arbitration. Ahmer will serve for a three-year term from 2024 to 2027.
The International Court of Arbitration is the world’s leading arbitral institution. Since 1923, it has helped resolve disputes in international commercial and investment disputes. Elections by the ICC World Council, held on 11 June in Paris, were conducted in accordance with the provisions set out in the ICC constitution and statutes of the ICC Court.
The ICC Court, comprises 195 members from 121 countries and includes 17 Vice-Presidents. It will be led by Claudia Saloman who was appointed for a second three-year term, commencing 1 July 2024. The court sits in review of the awards given by the arbitral tribunals functioning under the umbrella of ICC. The court administers arbitrations by exercising judicial supervision of arbitration proceedings. Its responsibilities include:
- confirming, appointing and replacing arbitrators, as well as deciding on any challenges made against them
- monitoring the arbitral process to make certain that it is performed properly and with the required speed and efficiency necessary
- scrutinising and approving all arbitral awards to reinforce quality and enforceability
- setting, managing and — if necessary — adjusting arbitrator fees and cost advances
- overseeing emergency proceedings before the start of the arbitration
Members of the ICC Court are appointed by the ICC World Council, upon recommendation of ICC local offices known as national committees and groups, or upon proposal of the Court President. The Council includes representatives from the global business community (national committees and direct members) who convene annually.
