Supreme Court appoints Senior Partner as Amicus

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has appointed Senior Managing Partner of the firm, Ahmer Bilal Soofi, as amicus curiae (friend of the court) in the Memogate case to advice on the possibility of extraditing Hussain Haqqani, Pakistan’s former Ambassador to the US, in relation to alleged misappropriation of funds.

Ahmer Bilal Soofi is one of the leading experts on international law in Pakistan and has previously served as the Federal Law Minister of Pakistan. The issue will involve interpretation of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption and a bilateral extradition treaty between Pakistan and the US.

During today’s proceedings, the Chief Justice observed, “I have heard that the issuing of red warrants against Haqqani has been denied”. Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director General Bashir Memon informed the court today that he has contacted US officials in this regard. He further stated that he has shown US officials the warrants against Haqqani as well as informed them of the matter of Rs0.1 billion worth of alleged misappropriation by him.

After a detailed hearing, the Court appointed Ahmer Bilal Soofi as amicus.
